One of the most popular and well known forms of dance. This high-energy dance has a liveliness that sets it apart from traditional dance forms, such as ballet or lyrical classes.
Jazz dance develops in parallel to pop music, with jazz being the physical embodiment of popular music of a given time. It therefore continues to evolve and remain popular across the world and across age groups.
Jazz dance includes any style of jazz, from commercial, lyrical, broadway or street jazz.
Hip Hop
Hip-hop is a unique and exciting style of street dance that combines a variety of freestyle movements to more upbeat music creating a different level of fun and creativity.
Hip-hop dance has evolved into one of the most popular and influential styles of dance. The most common hip-hop dance styles include:
Breakdancing featuring acrobatic moves, including headspins, handstands, and freezes. Breakdancing is often associated with rap music.
Freestyle is characterized by loose body movements and freestyle rhyming lyrics.
Krumping is characterized by sharp, jerky movements, aggressive execution, and expressiveness where dancers tend to use their bodies in rapid, exaggerated movements.
Locking focuses on technical precision with smooth movements that seamlessly flow together without pauses between steps or turns
Popping is another popular form of hip-hop dance characterized by fast movements with the feet and hands
Students can dance in a boys-only environment to facilitate a more masculine style of movement.
Lyrical/Contemporary
Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques.
Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer’s movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. It is performed to music with lyrics so that it inspires expression of strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics of the song. It does not concentrate on the dancer’s precision of movement.
Movements in lyrical are fluid, continuous, and graceful, with the dancer flowing seamlessly from one move to another with little or no stopping, holding finishing steps as long as possible. These emotional dance moves help the dancer connect on an emotional level with the audience.
Contemporary dance is an expressive style of dance that abandons the rigid, centered aspect of classical forms of dance, and utilizes unconventional movements from styles around the world. It incorporates certain elements of ballet, modern dance, and jazz.
Contemporary dance focuses more on big movements, feeling the emotion of the music, and pushing the boundaries of dance.
